The work: Rev. Francis Orpen Morris. A History of British Birds, London 1851. The Publication, which took over 7 years to complete, was undertaken in monthly parts costing 1 shilling. Each part contained 24 pages of letterpress and 4 hand-coloured plates. The final 6 volume work contained 358 coloured plates. Alexander Francis Lydon was one of Fawcett’s principal engravers, contributing much in technique and design. A team of women colorists under very strict scrutiny from Fawcett hand colored each plate. Morris became an early advocate for conservation and was instrumental in founding the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Each engraving is a Xylographic (woodcut) print with additional hand colouring. Benjamin Fawcett was one of the finest of the 19th century woodblock colour printers. THIS IS AN ESTATE FIND. A WATERCOLOR/ OF THREE PHASES OF FENCING. FIG 19, FIG 20 AND FIG 21. ALL ARE 3 DIFFERENT POSITIONS OF FENCING. IT IS TITLED ESCRIME WITH THE NAME DEFEHRT FECIT IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER AND IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER IS PL. V1. I AM ASSUMING THAT THIS MAY HAVE COME FROM A BOOK BUT I AM NOT SURE AND ALSO I THINK THAT THERE ARE MORE BECAUSE OF THE FIGURE NUMBERS. THIS IS THE ONLY ONE WE FOUND.
IT MEASURES IN THE FRAME 20 1/4 BY 18 1/4. OUT OF THE FRAME IT IS 13 BY 18 1/4. THERE IS NO GLASS IN THE FRAME, SO A NEW FRAME WOULD BE BETTER. I WOULD SAY THAT IT DOES NEED A CLEANING BECAUSE OF IT NOT HAVING THE GLASS. THERE ARE A FEW BEND MARKS AND A FEW WRINKLES BUT NOT BAD. THERE IS ALSO SOME MASKING TAPE ON THE BACK SIDE. SOMEONE TAPED IT FROM THE BACKSIDE OF THE WATERCOLOR ONTO THE INSIDE FRAME. THE FRAME IS NOT IN GOOD CONDITION.
I CAN AT YOUR REQUEST JUST MAIL THE WATERCOLOR IN A TUBE, AND NOT THE FRAME. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING....HAVE A GREAT DAY........
